This ensures customers will not incur the cost of any gas that may have been lost due to tornado damage.

If you smell gas, act fast!

If you suspect a gas leak, do not assume that someone else has already called it in. Our call center is fully staffed and ready to take safety-related calls.

If you are experiencing a gas-related emergency, leave on foot immediately and call 800-992-7552 and 911 from a safe location.

If a leak does occur, here are some signs of a natural gas leak for you to be aware of:

  • An odor that smells similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. This is caused by “mercaptan,” an odor mixed with the natural gas to help identify it in the event of a leak.
  • A loud roaring sound like an engine
  • White vapor that looks like smoke or fog
  • A hissing or whistling noise
  • Fire coming out of a hole or on top of the ground
  • Dirt blowing from a hole in the ground
  • An area of frozen ground in the summer near a pipeline
  • Patches of dead vegetation or grass near a pipeline

What to do after a tornado has occurred:

Stay in the know - Listen to local news and weather stations to stay updated about additional storm watches or warnings. Oftentimes, strong storms bring in multiple rounds of severe weather capable of producing more than one tornado.

Contact family and friends - let loved ones know you’re safe and out of danger so they can help spread the word. During or after storms, communication via phone calls can be difficult. Text messaging or social media are quicker forms of connectivity. Be sure to follow @SummitUtilities on Facebook to stay up-to-date about natural gas-related service in your area.

Assess damage - After all threat of tornadoes has passed, carefully check your home or business to see if there are any damages. However, do not enter a damaged building. When assessing storm damage, wear strong, sturdy shoes, long pants, and a long shirt to keep your body safe from harm. Never enter into a damaged building.

If you smell gas, act fast! For any gas-related emergency, leave on foot immediately and call 800-992-7552 and 911 from a safe location.

Provide aid to a neighbor - If you come across someone who needs help or is injured and you are properly trained, provide first-aid if needed until emergency response teams arrive.
